The Christmas Caravan
Sae got this book for Christmas last year because her family always have Christmas somewhere in their blue caravan – they have had Christmas on beaches, mountains, farms and beside rivers. She says they always decorate their caravan with things they collect from wherever they are, too – like Simon does in the book. Sae says she likes Robyn Belton’s pictures – and she draws really good cats.
Something in the Air
Sae is a really good reader so she often reads books for older kids. She says this is about a girl, Peggy, living in the 1920s in England who starts to hear odd noises in her head. It's not music or humming...it seems to be Morse code. Sae says the best thing about this book - apart from the mystery of the sounds which is solved at the end - is how much you learn about everyday life back then - what they did ad school, at home, for fun. She says that it seems very similar to now, even though it was nearly 100 years ago. She says also she now knows quite a bit about the First World War.

Sae reads everything she can get her hands on about Japanese people living in other countries. This is the story of two sisters and their immigrant parents in American in the 1950s. She says the two sisters are so kind and gentle with each other that it has inspired her to be much nicer to her sister and her little brother. The funniest thing about the book is the imaginary boyfriend that Katie - the girl who tells the story - has; he's called Joe-John Abondondalarama. The saddest thing is what happens to Lynnie, the oldest sister.
